BECOMING A SKILLED COURT REPORTING PROFESSIONAL
Our Court Reporting faculty is dedicated to teaching and helping students develop their machine shorthand skills to create an accurate verbatim transcript of proceedings. Classes in both programs include instruction in the area of machine shorthand theory and speedbuilding, legal procedures and technology, medical terminology, grammar and punctuation, and training on industry leading software for computer-aided transcription. Our internship course takes the learning out of the classroom into a legal setting which gives students an opportunity to work side by side with a professional court reporter. LIBI Commack has been educating court reporters for over 50 years, and we are very proud of our accomplishments.
Many of our graduates have gone on to obtain high-profile positions in the Unified Court System, owning freelance court reporting agencies and CART firms which provide services to the hearing-impaired community.
Court Reporting is a rewarding, high-tech career that puts you in the middle of the action and provides a lucrative income for your hard work. Because of the advances in technology, today’s court reporters are on the cutting edge of technology and are translating the spoken word into print.
The job of the court reporter actually consists of two jobs. The first part of the job is the court reporter taking down everything that is said during a trial in a courtroom or during a pre-trial deposition on a steno machine. The second part of the job consists of producing an accurate transcript of the proceedings. Behind the scenes the reporter translates, edits, researches, proofs, corrects and certifies that the transcript is complete, true, and accurate. This is why court reporters are known as the “Guardians of the Record.”
Court reporters play an integral role in maintaining the integrity of all legal proceedings. They will continue to capture, protect, and preserve “the record” for all time. Currently there is a tremendous need for court reporters across the country. A Court Reporting Career is waiting for you.

PROGRAMS OFFERED AT COMMCK CAMPUS ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE & CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
LIBI Commack offers two programs in the area of Court Reporting. A 65-credit Associate’s Degree and a 54-credit Certificate Program. Both programs focus on honing one’s writing skills to achieve an exit speed of 225 words per minute. Faculty also provide individualized instruction in a supportive setting that gives students the self-confidence needed to succeed.
The major difference between the Associate’s Degree and the Certificate Program is the general education courses; i.e., College English I, College English II, Introduction to Business Communications, and Introduction to Psychology, which are part of the Associate’s Degree.
Deciding which program fits into your busy schedule is a personal choice; however, whichever one you decide upon will provide the training necessary to become a successful court reporter.

Court Reporting is an evolving field where the opportunities are boundless. Not all court reporters spend their days in the courtroom. Court reporting skills and technology are used to provide captioning for live and prerecorded programs on broadcast TV and the Internet.
