Tutoring Options at LIBI
Course-Specific and ESL Tutoring Available
The Academic Success Center is here to support you and to help with any learning difficulties you may encounter.
It is normal that at some point in our learning endeavors we come across difficulties. As such, LIBI recognizes that you may need some additional help to comprehend certain material you may encounter in your classes.
Whether you are having problems with your math class, English, or having a difficult time comprehending a technical concept, additional help is available at the Academic Success Center for you. It’s normal not to understand, but it is not acceptable to ignore the problem because there are resources at LIBI to help you (before class, after class, or whenever you are available).
Personal and Effective ESL Tutoring
LIBI has developed a well-articulated and comprehensive ESL program covering all communication skills including grammar, writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Audio-visual and computer-assisted and Internet- based learning resources are available for ESL students. Self-study at the Academic Success Center and the library afford additional support materials and assistance.
The library maintains an extensive collection of vocabulary-level specific books, magazines, audiotapes, and DVDs/CDs for use by ESL students. Additionally, LIBI ESL instructors, most holding master’s degree credentials in TESOL, provide tutoring through the Academic Success Center at no additional cost to our students.
Check out Our Conversation Club!
A weekly conversation club conducted by the Academic Success Center allows ESL students to practice their English in an instructor-led, organized, but informal setting. Students should speak to their Assigned Academic Advisor, or visit the Academic Success Center, to participate in or to obtain more information about the conversation club.
Subject-Specific Help at the Academic Success Center
Students who begin to experience difficulties in a particular course or are finding it hard to keep pace with the class, should speak to their instructor as soon as the issue becomes evident to the student. Students may also speak to their assigned academic advisor as soon as possible to avoid “falling behind”. Early intervention is the key to academic success – don’t be shy about asking for help!
If you are struggling with a particular topic, speaking to your instructors or academic advisors will allow them to work with the Academic Success Center to secure additional help for you. The Academic Success Center provides extensive tutorial and “extra-help” workshops to all students enrolled at LIBI. One-on-one tutoring sessions with faculty in all course- related subjects are available by appointment. “Walk-in” group tutoring with faculty is also available at the Center. An updated weekly schedule of tutoring sessions is available at the academic advising office and the Campus Information and Visitor Center desk.
