Accommodations to Students with Disabilities
Long Island Business Institute is committed to providing equal access to educational opportunities for students with physical or mental disabilities – in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Students requesting accommodation need to provide appropriate documentation.
Obligations of LIBI Under Section 504 and the ADA
LIBI must provide reasonable accommodations to the student’s known and documented disability in order to give that student an equal opportunity to participate in the college’s programs, activities, and services. Extracurricular activities are included in this provision.
Obligations of Students with Disabilities
Any LIBI student wishing to receive accommodations for a documented disability under the protections of Section 504 and the ADA, has the obligation to provide the college with appropriate documentation that establishes the existence of his/her disability and the need for accommodation. The student also has the responsibility and the obligation to self-identify his/her disability and needs for accommodation to the Office of the Registrar or to the students’ academic advisor.
Veterans with Disablilities
LIBI acknowledges and is grateful for the great personal sacrifices of service members and veterans. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act extend special protections to students with a wide range of disabilities including traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, loss of limb(s), severe burns, deafness, vision difficulties, and learning disabilities. The Disability Services Office is responsible for helping veteran students identify the necessary paperwork for establishing the need for accommodations, if appropriate.
